With sustained growth rates near 60% Y/Y, PayPal Merchant Services has become a major pillar of growth for (EBAY). In last week's Q2 report, the percentage of PayPal TPV from Merchant Services was already up to 49%, which means that sometime this quarter, PayPal Merchant Services will officially overtake PayPal on-EBAY in TPV.

And there is still plenty of room for growth. As of Q2, only 32 of the top 100 US merchants and 13 of the top 50 UK merchants offered PayPal. That's a lot higher than in Q1 but still represents only a minority of merchants. Already in Q3, PayPal has announced the addition of OfficeMax and American Eagle Outfitters (AEO) to the PayPal roster.

    About time we get some good news about eBay.

    Pay-Pal is great! Every business or merchant on the internet should offer Pay-Pal!
    I also hope that... Sears...Walmart...Home Depot...Lowe's etc, will all jump on the band wagon with pay-pal.
    (PS...I shop these stores on the internet)

    Pay-Pal is better and easier to use. You can pay with credit card/ debit / from checking account/ etc. You can keep up with your pay-Pal account and see where your money goes. I Love Pay-Pal.

    You don't have to keep filing out your credit card info on every merchant site. All you do is click on Pay-Pal logo and everything else is simple!

    EBay however is getting away from auctions. Don't know why they still call themselves eBay auctions, lol.
    Not many auctions running.
    Most are Buy now...Set Price...Express buy, etc.
    They need to change their name! lol.

    Merchant service growth is strong indeed, but still limited to online.

    Mobile payment solutions is a huge potential market for paypal. Check out their new iPhone app which allows payment to any paypal account on the go.

    Dominating mobile payment solutions opens all offline purchase volume to paypal from vending machines to retail stores. Huge growth potential.

    I predict Paypal's growth is going to come to a screeching halt when the 1st class action suiit is filed against them for holding eBay sellers funds hostage for up to 6 months while they earn money on the float.

    Paypal's database may also has a serious security flaw. Recently eBay users discovered that their active Paypal account information has been replaced with old account info (old addresses).

    According to ebay discussion boards, some users Paypal account info has been mixed up with other users account info. This is especially disturbing given the fact that Paypal's site has been increasingly difficult to access.

    How long is Delta & Blockbuster going to put up with this? I suspect about long as it takes to void the contract.

    Paypal is also using Paypal issued debit cards (funded by users Paypal accounts) to earn more money in fees & on the float.

    How are they doing this? Paypal is putting a $75.00 hold on debit cardholders funds every time they purchase gasoline. Curiously, user funds are never released until after accounts are overlimit and additional fees charged.

    How long are debit cardholders going to put up with this?

    Dinah, how about some disclosure here--how many Ebay shares are you short??

    Your smear posts sound like what we are going to get from the Republican national committee a week before the election.

    I have never posted a comment but I read the blog every day. I agree with Don. It is obvious that Dinah is less interested in Pay Pal and how it relates to long term growth for Ebay and more interested in trashing the stock. This reflects poorly on her and detracts from an otherwise great blog.

    Dinah's response to Don -

    I never have and never will own so much as one share of eBay stock because management doesn't seem to make good decisions.

    Years ago I did have approximately $100,000.00 in mutual funds through Fidelity Investments but I cashed out to buy a house.

    I submit that Paypal will not be able to successfully defend any class action suit arising from the 6 month holds they place on some sellers accounts because what they're doing is wrong.

    How would you like YOUR money held for up to 6 months?

    Jul 23 11:56 AM
    Another reason I stopped listing on ebay! Add to that all the other defective programs they are throwing their customers into, the whole thing looks quite messy for such a large company to try and fix!

    Jul 23 07:39 PM
    Dinah, please elaborate. How does PayPal place a 6-month hold on an accountholder's funds? Are you talking about the chargeback process?

    PayPal did implement changes to hold funds for up to 21 days on high-risk transactions. You can read a good description of it here:
    money.cnn.com/2008/02/.../

    Funds may be held or removed during chargeback, which can be a very lengthy process. Chargebacks are issued by the cardholder's issuing bank, not PayPal. This is covered in the PayPal User Agreement and elaborated in great detail on their website at https://paypal.com/us/cgi-bin/....

    In the interest of disclosure, I am a shareholder of eBay. PayPal's growth will outstrip overall eBay revenue and that's the ball shareholders should keep their eye on.

    Dinah's response to ShowmeData -

    It took a while but I finally found the 6 month (180 days) hold for you buried in Section 10.2 of the user agreement last modifed on July 9, 2008. This clause should concern shareholders because it's why eBay lost several high volume sellers and I don't know any business that can survive a 6 month hold on their monies.

    Here's Section 10.2 in its entirety.

    10.2 Actions by PayPal. If we have reason to believe that you have engaged in any Restricted Activities, we may take various actions to protect PayPal, eBay, a User, a third party, or you from Reversals, Chargebacks, Claims, fees, fines, penalties and any other liability. The actions we may take include but are not limited to the following:

    We may close, suspend, or limit your access to your Account or the Services (such as limiting access to any of your Funding Sources, and your ability to send money, make withdrawals, or remove financial Information);

    We may contact third parties and disclose details of the Restricted Activities in the manner set out in our Privacy Policy;

    We may update inaccurate Information you provided us;

    We may refuse to provide our Services to you in the future;

    We may hold your funds for up to 180 Days if reasonably needed to protect against the risk of liability; and

    We may take legal action against you.

    ShowmeData -

    I nearly forgot something. The Restricted Activites Paypal references can be found in Section 9.1 of the user agreement.

    Subparagraph n is particularly interesting. Here it is:

    Have a credit score from a credit reporting agency that indicates a high level of risk associated with your use of the Services;

    Subparagraph k is even more interesting. Here it is:

    Conduct your business or use the Services in a manner that results in or may result in complaints, Disputes, Claims, Reversals, Chargebacks, fees, fines, penalties and other liability to PayPal, a User, a third party or you;

    Have a great evening!

    Dinah, I see that information in the agreement - but where are is the count of PayPal accountholders you claim are bolting for the exits?

    Why do you follow this stock if only to slam what you dislike about the user agreement? Does the word troll sound familiar?

    With all do respect, do you live in a cave? Because that can be the only possible answer to being so oblivious to the turmoil that has been roiling around ebay and paypal the last few months.

    ebay has become one of the most despised internet entities known today.

    Thousands, yes, THOUSANDS, of ebay sellers have closed shop. Including Yours Truly! Including many, many, many of the old-timers that have been there from the beginning. And that, in and of itself, is extremely telling!

    And yes, this is World Wide... don't kid yourself.

    I'm not going to re-cap all the malignant practices generated by this company. I expect you to do the research for youself. No excuses. Start right here... Seeking Alpha. Type in ebay behind that. Start reading. Go back several months.

    THEN, go to some other boards. Start searching. Read some more. In truth, Seeking Alpha is one of the few sites that has anything positive to say about ebay and paypal anymore.

    Now read, and read some more. No excuses. You'll get all your answers. Knock yourself out.

    Here's a broadcast news reporting that pretty well sums this up:

    seekingalpha.com/artic...

    And yes, it really is that bad. That's a pretty good reflection of what's going on with this company today.

    And paypal is WORSE around the world. Why are these companies still surviving? What makes you think, over the long haul, that they will?

    Now, just so that we are all clear on this, yes, THOUSANDS upon thousands have left, both ebay AND paypal. Have no doubt about that.

    Pull your head out of the sand, and look around. I think even Wall Street is beginning to get it.

    Can't wait for Quarter 3.

    What's the purpose of Seeking Alpha ?

    Is it to study investment strategies?
    Is it to pump and dump stocks for daytraders?

    Or is it for people with no lives to sit and fester in their own caves of despair? I'm beginning to think it's all of these.

    I laugh at you and all who sit here saying "eBay is one of the most despised internet entities..." - by what qualification? As of now whitehouse.gov is also "one of the most despised internet entities..." yet somehow it's not going out of business either, despite the thousands of its "users" who have been defrauded and yes, even killed by its policies.

    Good luck, losers. Buy now (to use an eBay term).

    Ebay has made the irreversible mistake of thinking it's bigger than the people who made it. They have turned avid advocates of their company into rabid detractors.

    They were created by word of mouth and will be detroyed the same way.

    Keep your stock and don't believe anything from those in the know.

    Ebay had better buy the world's biggest shredder, because they are going to be in court a lot in the next year or two...and I don't see how they can win any of the cases should the "facts" of their shady business practices be exposed.

    There are a lot of people in denial about ebays impending doom, but it is as real the the fake and padded listing they are appeasing the stockholders with. The problem with this philosophy is; it eventually catches up with you, no matter how rich, you can't live off of zero revenue from fake listings. Paypal is the only thing keeping ebay afloat...and that is being dumped at the same rate as ebay itself.

    They have too many enemies and they are growing daily...they will fall.

    Their stock is being artifically inflated, even as it drops daily. If you want to wait for it to rebound...perhaps I can sell you my Nortel stock while you're waiting.

    Can you say dump and run.

    There is another boycott being scheduled for Aug 1st - 15th...along with the one that has been ongoing since February 15th.

    I don't believe this would be a good time to put your money in an ebay stock. Of course, I can't advise anybody on how they wish to spend their money -- I can only point out what is coming up and let them decide for themselves.

    Who would have thought that ebay would turn from an auction site that sold millions of unique items to a site that now has more of it's stock being sold than it's items.
